The approach to this artwork is very simple yet it brings alive the essence of DDLJ. Starting from the characters which are shown in the attire of a king and the queen depicts how the contemporary couples perceive the character of Raj and Simran and how their fairy tale love story inspired many others and for the generations to come.
Salve has very elegantly composed the artwork where each minute frame speaks about romance, culture and captures the true spirit of this love saga. He has rightly used important elements like the rose, pigeons, bell, cow and the mandolin where all these elements play a significant role and are symbolic to the romance of DDLJ. These elements have nurtured, strengthened and constructed their love story. The red rose has been predominantly shown golden in this artwork as according to the artist it is because of such golden moments throughout the story their relationship and love evolved which lasted forever.
Along with contemporary feel, Salve who masters at using the ‘Indian miniature style’ has used varied expressions of Raj and Simran and marvellously woven them in their costumes as to show how deeply their chemistry and the love for each other was.
In the background salve has shown the farms of Punjab or rather ‘Sarso de khet’ whereas the Swiss Alps are shown in the cow with the famous bell over it. Salve wants to show how their journey of romance started in a different country and how it reached its destination but nothing changed – neither their love nor culture, and both succeeded in uniting in the end with their true love, faith in their culture and respect for elders intact.
The colour blue is used to show faith and trust that Simran had on Raj whereas red is shown to depict their pious, pure love and romance they had for each other. It also depicts Indian culture which is very subtly shown in the movie. Also, Salve has used golden colour in important part of this artwork in order to depict the richness of their love, the golden moments, their togetherness and the history the movie has created in the Indian cinema.
This painting has truly redefined the contemporary art just like the movie redefined love stories forever.
